Minister Murphy’s proposals on short-term letting welcomed by Corporate Housing Alliance but clarity on details still needed.
Thursday 25 October, Dublin
The Corporate Housing Alliance (CHA) has welcomed Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy’s announcement today that he is to regulate short-term letting, not least because the Minister appears to have recognised the unique nature of letting services provided to those travelling to Ireland on employment contracts. In essence, the Department has stated that the proposed changes will not affect the operation of longer-term flexible lettings which are provided for those coming to Ireland under employment contracts. The extended-stay sector plays an important role in providing a positive environment for both indigenous businesses and FDI in Ireland and does not negatively impact housing supply.
CHA spokesperson and Your Home from Home GM Donal McGing said: “this announcement is good news for our sector in that consideration has been given to the different business models that operate in the sector to facilitate FDI and we thank the Minister for that. We have questions around whether provision has been made for indigenous business in Ireland who move employees for set-term contracts around the country, not to mention patients and their families staying for 2-3 weeks near Dublin hospitals during treatment.
Mr. McGing continued: We will continue to support the Department of Housing and look forward to working with the Minister in any future consultations regarding the short-term letting sector in Ireland.
The corporate extended-stay sector, and the wider sharing economy, has seen considerable growth in recent years and CHA supports the need to regulate.
